traditionally, marriage has been regarded as the price men had to pay for sexual intercourse, and sexual intercourse as the price women had to pay for marriage. During the twentieth century this rather vulgar-minded tradition has been shattered?by two items of observation, and two of technology. It has been more and more widely observed that women are capable of enjoying sex and men of enjoying domesticity. And meanwhile, industrialisation has made more and more widely available two cardinal inventions : contraceptives and babies' feeding bottles.
